The Talking Cat

Andreanna Ulery, Age 10
Emerson Elementary

I have always been used to my own way of living, in my house, with my people. They don’t even know I can talk. But I can. I know it might be strange hearing about a cat who can talk. My name is Holly. I am an orange tabby with green eyes. I was adopted two years ago but one day the humans stuffed me in my carrier and put me in their car. They dumped me in a big city! I wanted to yell, “Come back!!!” But that would be startling to hear a cat who can talk, so I meowed. The next morning a lady yelled “Shoo cat!” at me, and I ran. I was three years old. It was evening when I found a home. But I didn’t yell because it was way late and nobody was awake. I had twisted my paw. That morning I yelled, “Help me! I hurt my back paw!” The people came and I said “Help!” They looked like they would have a hairball. But they wrapped me up and took me home. I sat on each person’s chest and said “Thank you.” I am now an old cat and I talk frequently. I love my family. The end!

Wyvern in Ann Arbor

James Ulery, Age 10
Daycroft Montessori

Gilan’s normal routine was to run in the morning, so she was on her run when a loud, sinister hiss was heard. Then a sleek, green Wyvern slithered from its hole! Gilan was so scared. Will it eat me or burn me? she thought. The thing was sleek and green. It was a long serpent with two wings and two clawed legs with a classic barbed tail like an arrowhead. It had a yellow cat eye and a mouth with razor-sharp fangs. Its mouth reeked of ash, poison, and sulfur. Gilan turned around and ran when a tree next to her had vaporized in an explosive fireball. Gilan just kept running and running until she reached the boat rental. Then she said, “Sir, there is a dragon in the woods!” “No there is not, lady.” But little did they know, in a lair of reed and bone the Wyvern glared at them. Just then, the dragon rose and circled above the lake and shot a fireball and flew off. “Oh my gosh,” said the boat owner. “You’re right.” “Help, help,” bellowed the boat owner as his livelihood was vaporized by the intense flames. People screamed and fled. Its flickering tail smashed buildings and its fire boiled the water and dead fish floated to the top. The dragon circled over Ann Arbor spewing poison and flames but the people fled to avoid danger. The dragon flew to the Argo Cascades, where a portal appeared and the Wyvern flew in. A new portal appeared and a red blinding laser appeared and smote the feathery portal so hard it vaporized in a cloud of blinding white smoke. The civilians roared their thanks.

Pipper the Mouse

Leela Zirinsky, Age 12
Rudolf Steiner School

As a mouse, Pipper had a lot of responsibilities. Stay away from humans, traps, and cats. Although she was shy and curious, she was not dumb. She stayed away from traps—though the cheese looked yellow and tasty, she stayed away. She loved playing video games in the Mouse Hop Arcade. She met friends and even met a new friend who turned out to be a soft-hearted cat named Crow. Everywhere she went she made friends. She was outgoing and always got a lot of joy out of giving money to the poor. She even went to Brazil!

IceCreamicorn and Donuticorn

Maggie Jewell, Age 10
Bach Elementary

There was a unicorn outside of Washtenaw Dairy named IceCreamicorn. When IceCreamicorn and her best friend Donuticorn appeared in front of the Washtenaw Dairy, they were confused. IceCreamicorn felt cold stuff melting down her forehead. She licked it and found out that it was ice cream. She was glad that her tongue was long enough to lick the ice cream off of her forehead. It was Superman ice cream, so it had lots of flavor. Unicorns love foods with lots of flavor.

Coffee Woman and Cupcake Monster

Reva Patchava, Age 9
Calvary Christian Academy

Once there lived a superhero named Coffee Woman and her sidekick was Cupcake Monster. Today’s story takes place at the sweetest shop in the world, Sweetwaters Cafe. A robber was trying to get away with twenty pounds of coffee. The robber was Slugo and his sidekick was Blobby. Slugo was a monster with pop-out eyes. He was very sluggish, and Blobby was a Jell-O blob. He was casually walking into Sweetwaters Cafe. “Can I have a twenty pound cappuccino”? said Slugo. “We don’t have that much coffee, sir,” said Eli, a worker. “Wait, you were here yesterday. We caught you on camera talking to your sidekick Blobby.” … To be continued by you!!!
